Phase 1 Complete
We are happy to announce that the first phase of our regeneration is now complete and our Studio’s are ready to be filled with exciting events and activities for our Community. We have created a fully accessible venue, with Sprung floor performing arts studios, housed in a lovingly restored 1930’s Art Deco Cinema. Our lift makes every floor accessible so get your groups booked in now.

What We've Been up to
In 1938 THE ROXY opened as a cinema which was loved and cherished by its community. Later being converted to a bingo hall in 1963. She closed her doors in 1985 and has stood derelict since. Watling Spaces CIC is regenerating the entire building into a Fully Accessible Community Arts Venue. This will enable our community to access this fantastic facility once again. The layout has changed substantially but the 1930’s art deco features have been lovingly restored and you would be hard pressed to differentiate between the original features and the new.
The development is taking place in two phases – starting with 3 brand new multi-functional studio spaces, a new foyer and a café bar snugly housed in the cinema’s original projection room.
The second phase is to bring the stage and auditorium back to life, creating a 360-seat Proscenium Arch Community Theatre with a grand circle to North West Durham.
Our aim is to ensure full disabled access to all the studios, the café, grand circle, stage, dressing rooms and orchestra pit to ensure everyone in our society is on a level playing field.
